LED is much more efficient and energy effective than tranditional incandescents bulb, but still most of the input power transfers into heat, that means we still need build a channel to dissipate the extra heat. The heat is generated due to the efficience of the semiconductor generating light could not be 100%, the efficience of light conversion is 5%-40%, so it means that 60%-95% of the input power would be transformed into heat, and the unwanted heat would be harmful for the LED bulbs if it's not removed in time, it will underpower the LED when the LED is on the total voltage but the output power is much less. So a LED bulb heat sink is essential for the application.

For high power LEDs, it's critical to select an effective thermal option to dissipate the heat, if heat has no path to move out, the internal junction of LED will rise up and affect the light conversion even damge the applications.

Heat sink can be clarified into two types by fluid, air cooling and liquid cooling, the main material of heat sinks is aluminum and copper, both of these two materials have excellent thermal conductivity, but copper is even better than aluminum, due to the price factor, aluminum is widely used in the market. For air cooling solution, usually we design extruded heat sink, cold forged heat sink, and skived fin heat sink for the low power LEDs, but for high power LEDs, we have to apply the heat pipes and vapor chamber assemblied heat sinks to meet the thermal requirements, liquid cooling is also a main consideration for high power LEDs.
