Charging
 
  • Use a NiCd-Specific Charger: Always use a charger designed for NiCd chemistry. Using an incompatible charger can be dangerous .

  • Temperature Monitoring: Charge only within the specified temperature range (0°C to +45°C is common ; 10°C-30°C is ideal ).
 
  • Charge in a Well-Ventilated Area: Provide adequate space around the charger and battery during charging.

 

Discharging

 

  • Mitigating Memory Effect: To minimize memory effect:
 
    • For devices with deep cycles: Ideally, fully discharge the battery (to ~1.0V per cell) before each recharge .
 
    • For applications with partial cycles: Every 10-15 cycles, perform a full discharge followed by a full charge .
 
  • Avoid Excessive Deep Discharge: While periodic full discharge helps with memory effect, repeatedly discharging far below 1.0V per cell can be harmful. Avoid leaving tools or devices with dead batteries switched on for extended periods.
 
  • Temperature Management: Avoid discharging outside the recommended temperature range (-20°C to +60°C ). Extreme cold reduces performance; extreme heat accelerates aging.
 
 
Storage
 
  • Partial Charge Storage: For long-term storage (longer than a few months), it is often recommended to store the battery in a fully discharged state (or near 0V) as this can allow for easier capacity recovery later .
 
  • Cool and Dry Environment: Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture, and heat sources. The ideal storage temperature is between -20°C to +35°C or below 35°C for long periods .
 
  • Recovery after Storage: After prolonged storage, the battery may require a few charge/discharge cycles to regain its full capacity.
