Function
The hydraulic main pump acts as the hydraulic power heart of excavators. Powered by the engine, it turns mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic energy and delivers pressurized fluid for boom, stick, bucket, travel and swing motors to drive all machine operations.
Type
Most construction excavators utilize axial variable piston pumps. Mid-to-large size machines adopt integrated dual main pumps with a built-in pilot gear pump at the rear side.
High-pressure tandem pump: Left and right pump units supply oil separately to different valve ports of main control valve to realize combined actions, working pressure ranging from 28 to 35MPa.
Low-pressure pilot pump fixed on pump tail runs at 3~4MPa with small flow, supplying pilot oil for control joysticks and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
Housing & cylinder block: Several pistons inside rotate with spindle to finish oil suction and pressurization.
Swash plate changes tilt angle to adjust piston stroke and pump displacement.
Side-mounted regulator pushes swash plate via hydraulic signal: bigger angle brings larger displacement, higher flow and quicker movement; smaller angle cuts displacement and fuel use while avoiding engine stall.
Valve plate separates oil inlet and high-pressure outlet for oil distribution.

Three Control Modes
Constant power control lowers pump displacement automatically under heavy load to protect engine from stalling and fully utilize rated power.
LS load sensing control provides flow as required and keeps low displacement for fuel saving during idle.
HP pressure cut-off minimizes pump displacement once pressure peaks to safeguard tubes and cylinders against rupture.

Common Failures
Slow & weak operation results from worn pistons/valve plate causing internal leakage or stuck regulator.
Black smoke and engine stall under heavy load occur when regulator locks at large displacement leading to overload.
Severe inner leakage turns pressure loss into heat and raises hydraulic oil temperature.
Air suction, inadequate oil or broken bearings/pistons create unusual pump noise.

Maintenance
Regular oil and filter replacement prevents impurity scratch on core parts; seal suction pipe to avoid air intake and shaking; keep proper oil level to prevent pump damage.
