Function
As the central hydraulic power unit of excavator equipment, the hydraulic main pump is driven by the engine. It converts rotational mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic energy and provides stable pressurized oil for boom, stick, bucket, travel and swing hydraulic motors to realize full machine operation.
Type
Construction excavators are generally equipped with axial variable piston pumps. Medium and large models adopt integrated dual main pump structure with a built-in rear pilot gear pump. The dual high-pressure pump contains two independent oil supply units, delivering oil to different passages of the main control valve for compound movements, with working pressure ranging from 28MPa to 35MPa. The rear pilot pump operates at low pressure of 3~4MPa with small flow output, providing control oil for operating handles and main valve spools.
Internal Parts
The pump housing and cylinder block assembly drive internal pistons to rotate with the main shaft, completing continuous oil suction and pressurization. The swash plate adjusts its tilt angle to change piston stroke and overall pump displacement. The external hydraulic regulator pushes the swash plate according to real-time pressure signals: increased inclination raises displacement, flow rate and working speed; reduced inclination minimizes fuel consumption and prevents engine stall under heavy load. The valve plate separates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet to achieve accurate oil distribution.
Three Control Modes
Constant power control automatically decreases pump displacement under heavy load to protect the engine and improve power utilization efficiency. LS load sensing control delivers adaptive flow based on actual working demands and maintains low-displacement operation at idle to save fuel. HP pressure cut-off control instantly reduces pump displacement to the minimum when system pressure reaches the limit, effectively protecting hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from overpressure rupture.
Common Failures
Worn pistons or valve plates cause internal leakage, while regulator jamming leads to slow speed and insufficient digging power. A regulator fixed at large displacement results in excessive oil output, causing engine overload, black smoke and stall during heavy operation. Severe internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy and triggers abnormal hydraulic oil temperature rise. Pipeline air ingestion, insufficient oil volume or damaged bearings and pistons will generate irregular pump noise.
Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filter elements periodically to avoid particle abrasion on precision internal components. Keep suction pipelines tightly sealed to prevent air intake and machine vibration. Maintain standard hydraulic oil level at all times to avoid premature pump damage.
