Function
The hydraulic main pump serves as the core power component for excavator hydraulic systems. Driven by the prime engine, it transforms mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy, and sends pressurized fluid to hydraulic motors to drive boom, stick, bucket, traveling and slewing actions.
Type
Axial variable displacement piston pumps are popularly used on engineering excavators. Medium and large excavators adopt integrated dual main pumps fitted with a rear pilot gear pump.
The twin high-pressure pumps have independent oil supply circuits, supplying oil to the main control valve to achieve composite working actions, with operating pressure 28~35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump at the pump rear runs at 3~4MPa with low flow rate, delivering pilot oil for control levers and main valve spools.

Internal Parts
The housing and cylinder block are equipped with multiple piston units, which rotate with the main shaft to complete oil suction and pressure generation.
Adjusting the swash plate tilt angle can change piston stroke and pump volumetric displacement. The external servo regulator drives the swash plate based on hydraulic feedback.
Greater tilt angle increases displacement and flow for faster operation; smaller tilt angle lowers fuel consumption and prevents engine stall.

Common Failures
Internal leakage from worn pistons, damaged valve plates or blocked regulators causes slow movement and insufficient output power.
A locked regulator at maximum displacement leads to engine overload, black smoke and stall during heavy-duty work.
Excessive internal leakage produces extra heat and triggers hydraulic oil overheating. Air entrainment, insufficient hydraulic fluid or faulty parts will result in abnormal noise.

Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filters on a regular schedule to protect precision parts from abrasive damage. Keep suction pipes tightly sealed to avoid air intake and machine vibration. Maintain hydraulic oil at standard level to prevent pump faults.
