Function
The hydraulic main pump constitutes the key power unit inside excavator hydraulic systems. Driven by the prime mover engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy and routes pressurized working fluid to all executive hydraulic motors to power digging, traveling and slewing motions.
Type
Axial variable piston pumps see widespread deployment on engineering excavators. Large and medium-sized excavators adopt an integrated dual main pump assembly paired with a trailing pilot gear pump.
These dual high-pressure pumps come with isolated oil supply passages, feeding fluid into the main control valve for simultaneous compound actions, operating pressure: 28~35MPa.
The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the pump tail operates at 3–4MPa with low delivery volume, providing pilot control pressure for operating joysticks and main valve spools.

Three Control Modes
Constant power regulation lowers pump displacement automatically as load grows, protecting the engine and enabling full utilization of rated power.
The LS load-sensing system delivers flow on demand, sustaining low displacement at idle status to save fuel costs.
When system pressure reaches peak value, the HP pressure limiting function reduces pump displacement to protect hydraulic piping and cylinders from rupture failure.

Common Failures
Internal leakage stemming from worn pistons, defective valve plates or clogged regulators leads to slow machine response and insufficient power supply.
If the regulator locks in maximum displacement position, the engine will overload, emit black smoke and stall under heavy loads.
Excessive internal leakage generates thermal energy from pressure loss, causing abnormal temperature rise of hydraulic oil.
Air mixing in oil, low fluid level or defective bearings and pistons produce unusual running noise.

Maintenance
Replace hydraulic oil and filter elements at scheduled intervals to prevent abrasion damage to precision parts. Ensure suction pipeline sealing performance to avoid air intake and equipment shaking. Maintain hydraulic liquid at standard height to prevent pump malfunctions.
