The main hydraulic pump acts as the key power core of the excavator’s hydraulic circuit system. Driven by the machine’s engine, it converts mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy and delivers pressurized fluid to hydraulic motors, facilitating all working movements of the excavator. Axial variable displacement piston pumps are the mainstream configuration for engineering excavators. Mid-to-large size models are equipped with integrated dual main pumps paired with a rear pilot gear pump unit. Two independent high-pressure oil supply circuits feed the main control valve to enable composite movement functions, with a nominal working pressure of 28–35MPa. The tail-mounted low-pressure pilot pump operates at a pressure of 3–4MPa with low flow output, supplying required pilot pressure oil for operating levers and main valve spool control. Piston assemblies mounted on the cylinder block and pump casing rotate synchronously with the main shaft, accomplishing oil suction and pressure build-up. Modifying the swash plate’s inclination angle adjusts piston stroke length, which alters the pump’s displacement capacity. The external servo regulator actuates swash plate movement in response to hydraulic feedback signals. Increasing the swash plate angle raises fluid flow and working speed, while reducing it minimizes fuel consumption and eliminates engine stalling problems. The valve plate isolates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to achieve uniform hydraulic oil distribution. Three advanced control systems are equipped on the pump. Constant power control automatically decreases pump displacement as load increases, safeguarding the engine and improving overall power efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides on-demand fluid flow and maintains low idle displacement to save fuel. The HP pressure limiting system reduces pump displacement at peak pressure values, protecting hydraulic pipes and oil cylinders from cracking damage. Typical malfunctions include internal leakage stemming from piston wear, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, leading to slow operation speed and power deficiency. If the regulator is fixed at maximum displacement, the engine will be overloaded, emit black smoke and stall during heavy-duty operation. Excessive internal leakage converts pressure loss into thermal energy, triggering abnormal overheating of hydraulic oil. Air entering the hydraulic system, inadequate oil level, as well as damaged bearings and pistons, will cause abnormal operational noise. For maintenance, hydraulic oil and filter elements must be replaced periodically to prevent abrasion of precision internal parts. Suction pipeline sealing integrity must be guaranteed to prevent air intake and equipment vibration, and hydraulic oil level must be kept within the specified range to ensure stable pump performance.
