The main hydraulic pump is the core power source of an excavator’s hydraulic circuit system. Driven by the vehicle engine, it converts mechanical power into high-pressure hydraulic power and delivers pressurized oil to hydraulic motors, realizing all working motions of the excavator. Axial variable piston pumps are widely adopted on engineering excavators. Medium and large excavators use integrated double main pumps matched with a rear pilot gear pump unit. Two independent high-pressure oil delivery lines supply oil to the main control valve to support composite movements, with a rated working pressure between 28MPa and 35MPa. The tail-mounted low-pressure pilot pump operates at 3–4MPa with low flow, providing pilot pressure oil for control handles and main valve spools. Piston groups installed inside the cylinder block and pump casing rotate along with the main shaft, completing oil intake and pressure build-up procedures. Changing the inclination angle of the swash plate adjusts piston stroke, thus modifying the pump’s displacement value. The external servo regulator drives swash plate movement in response to hydraulic feedback signals. A greater tilt angle increases fluid flow and operating speed, while a smaller angle reduces fuel consumption and avoids engine stalling. The valve plate divides the hydraulic channel into low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet to complete oil distribution. Three control technologies are applied to the pump. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement when load increases, protecting the engine and improving power usage efficiency. The LS load-sensing system provides on-demand flow and keeps low displacement during idling to save fuel. The HP pressure limiting function minimizes pump displacement at peak pressure to prevent hydraulic pipes and cylinders from breaking. Frequently occurring faults include internal leakage induced by piston wear, valve plate damage or regulator blockage, which causes slow operation and power shortage. When the regulator is stuck at maximum displacement, the engine will be overloaded, produce black smoke and stall under heavy working conditions. Massive internal leakage converts pressure loss into heat energy, leading to abnormal hydraulic oil overheating. System air intake, insufficient oil level, and defective bearings and pistons will trigger abnormal operating sounds. Regular maintenance involves replacing hydraulic oil and filters on schedule to prevent abrasion of precision internal parts. Ensure tight sealing of oil suction pipes to avoid air suction and equipment vibration, and maintain standard hydraulic oil level to guarantee stable pump operation.
