As the pivotal power component for excavator hydraulic circuits, the main hydraulic pump is engine-driven to convert mechanical energy into high-pressure hydraulic energy. It transports pressurized hydraulic fluid to hydraulic motors to actuate all working movements of the excavator. The majority of engineering excavators are equipped with axial variable displacement piston pumps. Mid and large-sized machines feature integrated dual main pumps and a rear-mounted pilot gear pump assembly. Two separate high-pressure oil supply pipelines feed the main control valve to enable compound working motions, with a nominal operating pressure of 28–35MPa. The low-pressure pilot pump installed at the tail operates at 3 to 4MPa with low flow output, supplying pilot pressure oil for control levers and main valve spool actuation. Piston assemblies fixed in the cylinder block and pump casing rotate with the main shaft, completing oil suction and pressurization processes. Adjusting the swash plate tilt angle changes piston stroke length, which alters the pump’s displacement. The external servo regulator drives swash plate movement according to hydraulic feedback. Enlarging the tilt angle increases flow rate and working speed, while reducing it lowers fuel consumption and prevents engine stalling. The valve plate segregates low-pressure inlet and high-pressure outlet passages to achieve hydraulic oil distribution. The pump incorporates three functional control modes. Constant power control automatically reduces pump displacement under rising loads, protecting the engine and enhancing overall power utilization. The LS load-sensing system delivers flow as required and maintains low idle displacement for fuel conservation. The HP pressure limiting function decreases pump displacement at peak pressure, safeguarding hydraulic pipelines and cylinders from rupture damage. Common faults include internal leakage resulting from worn pistons, damaged valve plates or clogged regulators, leading to slow operation and power insufficiency. A regulator locked at maximum displacement causes engine overload, black smoke emission and stalling during heavy-load work. Excessive internal leakage generates heat from pressure loss, causing abnormal hydraulic oil temperature elevation. Air ingestion, low oil level, and faulty bearings and pistons will produce abnormal operating noise. Maintenance work includes periodic replacement of hydraulic oil and filters to prevent wear on precision internal components. Ensure excellent sealing of suction pipes to avoid air intake and machine vibration, and keep hydraulic fluid at the specified level to sustain stable pump performance.
